Armenia, a land of ancient cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, has long been a melting pot of diverse religious beliefs and traditions. Among the many cherished religious observances in this historically rich nation is the celebration of the Assumption of Mary. Held on the closest Sunday to  August 15th each year, this significant event is deeply entrenched in Armenian culture, reflecting the fusion of Christianity and unique Armenian customs.

The Assumption of Mary, locally known as “Asdvadzadzin,” is not celebrated in Armenia as other Christian countries do. Instead, we substituted the event with a ceremony called Խաղող օրհներք (Khaghogh Orhnek). This unique event, which translates to “Blessing of the Grapes,” pays homage to the age-old pagan holiday celebrating the harvest and the bountiful vineyards. The origins of Khaghoghorhnerk can be traced to the pagan holiday dedicated to the sun god, Mihr, celebrated during the autumnal equinox. This festival symbolized the transition from the fruitful harvest season to the onset of winter. As Armenia embraced Christianity in the early 4th century, the Church sought to assimilate and preserve certain elements of the country’s pre-Christian practices, including the celebration of Mihr.

The celebrations during Khaghogh Orhnek are joyous and vibrant, reflecting the spirit of thanksgiving for nature’s generosity. Colorful processions lead by traditional dancers and musicians meander through the streets, while locals don traditional attire, adding to the festive atmosphere. Central to the event is the blessing of the newly harvested grapes, where priests and religious figures preside over the ritual.

Apart from religious observances, the festival also features cultural displays, folk performances, and, of course, wine tasting sessions, as wine holds great significance in Armenian culture. It serves as a symbol of friendship and togetherness, fostering a sense of unity and community among the people.

As the holiday date is getting closer and closer, we prepared a beautiful tour opportunity for all those who are interested in experiencing the ceremony, learning about the traditions and background of Khaghogh Orhnek, and of course having an unforgettable wine-tasting ceremony that is the most essential part of the holiday.
